Site Selection

Site 1 - Harlem, NY

The proximity of this site to Central Park, as well as its prime location as a gateway building makes it dynamic in its ability to become something much more meaningful for the people of the neighborhood.

Site 2 - Central Park West, NY

A parking lot in the middle of a residential block provides a great connection to the biophilic features of Central Park.

Site 3 - Chelsea, NY

Caveats of Digital Design - Project 3

Biomimicry (biomimetics) - is the examination of nature, its models, systems, processes, and elements to emulate or take inspiration from in order to solve human problems.

This modular design concept does not solve human problems but uses nature as an aesthetic expression.  The honeycomb shape is manipulated to create a modular structure that the user is capable of arranging to suit them.

I developed a coffee table that can be folded for use of less packing materials during shipping, space saving for storage and ease of constructing for the consumer.

Program

The idea of program in this thesis is autonomous in its functional aspect.  In other words, the ideas presented in Biophilic Design are meant to be applied to the way we think about design and urban living.  The ideas can be applied to each design problem, program type, and still effectively produce positive physical and psychological effects on the human body.  My specific program choice is about reinventing what it means to live healthy and exercise in an urban context while still being connected to nature. This gives basis for a new approach to an urban health center.

Idea Mapping

Collection of personal images showing the idea of nature as pristine which is no longer true. As your eyes move right the pristine becomes evident of human intervention. Eventually the creation of structures as natural to human development.

Idea Map

Technology has caused us to lose touch with what nature is and what it means to our survival and humans.  We depend on nature for survival so why do we treat it like we do?
